The Soames Gallery Menu block lays out a row of image cards, each with a label and an optional link. It’s built for visual navigation menus, product or service grids, category pickers, or any place you want a tidy grid of clickable images with captions.
What it’s for
Each gallery card pairs an image with a label underneath and, optionally, a link so the whole card is clickable. You add as many items as you like and they flow into rows automatically. A View setting lets you choose how many cards sit in each row.
Adding a Gallery Menu
- In the editor, click the + button to open the block inserter.
- Search for Soames Gallery Menu (you’ll find it in the Soames block category) and insert it.
- Click Add item to create your first card, then fill in its fields (see below). Repeat for each card you want.
Filling in each item
Every gallery item keeps its own fields grouped together, so an image always travels with its label and link:
- Image. Click Select image to open the WordPress Media Library, where you can upload a new image or choose an existing one. A small thumbnail preview appears once it’s set; use Replace image to swap it or Clear to remove it. If your image already lives somewhere online, you can instead paste its address into the Image URL field just below the picker — the picker and the URL field control the same image, so you only need one of them.
- Label. The caption shown beneath the image. It also becomes the image’s alt text.
- Link. Where the card points when clicked. Use a full URL for another site (
https://…) or a path such as/services/for a page on this site. Leave it blank for a non-clickable card. - CSS class (optional). Lets a developer target this item for custom styling. Most authors can leave it blank.
Use the up and down arrows on an item to reorder it, or the trash icon to remove it.
Choosing a view: Standard or Compact
With the block selected, open the block Settings sidebar (the gear icon, top right) and find the Layout panel. The View dropdown controls how many cards fit in each row at full width:
- Standard — three larger cards per row. This is the default for a new block.
- Compact — four smaller cards per row, useful when you have more items or want a denser grid.
In either view the cards wrap onto additional rows as needed, and they stack into a single column on phones and narrow tablets, so the menu stays readable on every screen size.
Tips
- Use images of a consistent shape and size across items so the cards line up neatly in their rows.
- Choose Compact when a row of four looks balanced — for example, when your total number of items divides evenly by four (4, 8, 12…). Choose Standard for fewer, more prominent items.
- Keep labels short — a word or two reads best under each image.
- Use Preview to check how the grid wraps before you publish.
- As with all edits, your changes go live on the public site about a minute after you publish.
